Correct me if I'm wrong.?

As far as primary elections go, instead of a direct election of the people for the president, we vote for delegates to go to the convention and cast votes for us. The delegates are like the electoral college in the general election. I'm in a college political science cl and this is the way I understand it from what I've read in the textbook. Please correct any misinformation in what I've just posted. Thanks!
